Guest Lecture at Rotterdam School of Management

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I’ve been asked to give a guest lecture about business models at the Rotterdam School of Management for the Entrepreneurship minor.

I did one guest lecture before at the Erasmus University, that was really cool. It was about ideas and there were 4 guest lectures. The students chose mine as the best, most fun and most informative. I won a real bottle of water :)

Looking forward to this one as well.

Cool Idea for Postal Services

I always forget to put things in the mailbox and today it was nothing different. I forgot to post ‘the blue envelope’ for the fifth day in a row.
After my meeting with Travis Choma I saw the envelope and asked him if he went by a postal drop off box, he did, so I asked if he would be so kind to drop off my envelope… I mentioned briefly that it was important.

20 minutes later I received an email with a picture of my envelop going into the postal box. I thought this was pretty funny but also very convenient way to know for sure it was posted.

Wouldn’t this be a great idea for Fed-Ex, UPS, TNT etc… If they deliver a package somewhere they could make a picture of the package and the person who’s receiving it on their mobile phone and send it automatically to the sender of the package1 this way you would immediately know the package arrived at the right place and you can actually see the expression on the face of your friend, business contact, beloved one etc.!

I know they have a lot of track and trace software available and also probably email alerts text messages etc., but the visualization of someone receiving a package can bring a whole new dimension to shipping products !

It would be very cool for web services as well, you can show all the people who bought your product on a web page (I don’t think I’ll allow Christine le Duc to show my picture on their site though :) )

100 dollar laptop is such a cool project!

Yesterday I saw a short presentation by Ineke Aquarius of Butterflyworks who is working to distribute a couple of million laptops in Nigeria and educate the youth on their new computers.

It was an interesting and inspiring story… and I fell in love with the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) project.

I’ll write more about it later on, have to work now…

15 iPhones illegally imported :)

We just landed on Schiphol with 3 huge Apple store bags full of iPhones. In total we were walking around with 17 iPhones (a street value of around 8.000 dollars).

We did absolutely everything to get noticed by customs, we dropped the bags so the iPhones fell out, we wore white Paris Hilton like shades, bragged about how we bought all iPhones at the store in San Francisco…., but they refused to take any action whatsoever, so we decided not to turn them in and just walk through the “Less than 18 iPhones to declare” exit.

Now I have my iPhone working on vodafone and have installed some really cool applications! I’m really exited about it! Apple shares will go through the roof!

We’re (White suits) on Valleywag :)

As you may know we, the motherfleckers always wear white suits (sponsored by NewTailor) when we go out in public.
Now Boris and I are in San Francisco at the TechCrunch40 Conference. We’re having a great time and the number of people we’ve met is absolutely amazing. I’ve been updating my address book for over one hour, but still have to add new people.
Yesterday at the TC40 party a nice girl made some pictures of us in the white suits… guess what… It was a reporter fromValleywag

Here is the story about the party and if you look good, you can see us on one of the pics. enlarge it et voila (they even spelled Boris’ last name correctly :) )

About a 1000 people showed up at the conference, I wonder if they were expecting so many, because about 100 people are sitting on the ground (this includes me)
The first 5 startups have just presented:
Powerset.com, viewdle.com, cast.tv, Sylvia and …..
To me, viewdle and Sylvia were pretty impressive. Viewdle is a video search engine based on face recognition and Sylvia….. How do you explain that…. It is artificial intelligence and cool technology. Basically you say something to Sylvia and she will answer or do whatever you ask (well not anything…)

Now the panel is discussing the startups, questions about scaling, algorithms etc come up.
Om Malik agrees with me on Sylvia and viewdle (both will be bought soon).

Will be back with updates. You can follow me as well on twitter http://twitter.com/NextWeb

wifi limbo dance

Strange things happen if you have a constant need to be connected with the web (and don’t have GPRS or edge).

Here you can see Boris with his iPhone in the corner of the clift hotel, trying to pick up a wifi signal to send an email. I have seen him in stranger positions to catch a signal, for instance lying on the floor of our hotel because he knew that the third floor had wifi, but I wasn’t able to catch him with my camera then.

Other people familiar with the wifi limbo?

Oh, the rumor that all of san Francisco is wifi-ed by google is an urban legend.
