About a week ago, Saul Klein (Index ventures) and Reshma Sohoni (3i) started a new pan European initiative for startups and talented entrepreneurs (read my previous post on Seedcamp).
At The Next Web 2008 edition we will host Showcases of successful/promising European companies, just like we did on the 2006 and 2007 edition. Netvibes, Hyves, esnips, Widsets, Respectance, Zyb, Mobiya, eBuddy and others presented their companies on main stage for the highly tech savvy crowd. We decided that we will give two of the winning Seedcamp teams the opportunity to Showcase their service on The Next Web ‘08.
Teams can sign up for Seedcamp and win 50k Euros (and a Showcase) and have a great experience to be working with Europe’s leading internet entrepreneurs and investors.
A lot of good stuff is happening in Europe (Open Coffee clubs everywhere) and seedcamp is one of those great initiatives that helps Europe become competitive and on the edge. Well done Saul and Reshma, we’re excited to be working with you guys.
During The Next Web Conference a journalist came up to me asking me some great and funny questions. It resulted in a one page story in the Amsterdam Weekly with a great header and a (mine) quote:
An attempt to unravel Web2.0 at The Next Web Conference… One scoop: “It’s one of the few web-based initiatives that hasn’t been born out of the porn industry”
Last night we did a video interview with Tim O’Reilly. He has a great vision on what will happen next. We made a small trailer of it for The Next Web Conference. Check it out.
The Next Web Awards are the Awards for future accomplishments. Today we decided that it is rather cool to give away some future (not yet on the market) products. So now you can win an iPhone by casting your vote for The Next Web Awards.
This is funny, smart and remarkable.
This guy is working for a non-for profit organization and doesn’t have enough money to attend The Next Web Conference, but he sure wants to go to it! So he made this website, check it out :)
If we’re not in a meeting, in the car or doing fun stuff, I’m working all of the time and I just cannot find time to post some blogs. But this short story I like to blog.
We had a great day today. First we woke up Michael Arrington with a grande latte, then we worked at Plaxo and afterwards we had dinner and a great conversation with Kevin Kelly.
I got an email of a The Next Web attendee of last year which was rather special and great! I’ll quote it here:
Patrick,
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend this year. I’m attending a family wedding, and my wife would kill me if I told her that Web 2.0 was more important than a wedding (even though it’s obviously true!)
After I told him I was impressed with his devotion to The Next Web Conference and web2.0 in general and that I just loved the sentence, he replied:
I even suggested that we could hold the wedding in Amsterday … but I was told that I would have to pay for the plane tickets and hotel expenses of all 100 guests. Even though I’m very devoted to Web 2.0, that was a little too expensive for me!
I knew we’re organizing a great conference, but to hear these things from a last year attendee is almost unbelievable :)
Have you ever heard of an Award show where companies, services and people got an Award for something they haven’t done yet?
The Next Web Awards is the first Award ceremony that will actually do that :) Isn’t that cool! From the blogrelease:
The Award ceremony will take place after The Next Web Conference on June 1st during the grand party. The Red Carpet, limos, The Next Web Award Tech Schwag Bag, industry icons, you name it…. even Ashton Kusher might show up..
The Next Web Awards is a spin-off of The Next Web Conference.
The concept for the Awards consists of two rounds: The nomination round and the voting round. During the nomination round the public can suggest their favorite service or person in one of the categories. By April 15th, the jury will have selected the nominees out of all suggestions given by the public, and as of that moment the world can vote for its favorites.
Awards can be won in the following categories:
- Entertainment (Let me entertain you!)
- Social (You and me)
- Search (Find it!)
- Disruptors (Give me your share, now!)
- Web Celeb (Who’s the (wo)man!)
- Beta & Stealth (Rookie of the year)
- Populizr (Show me the visitors)
- Company (One company, to rule them all..)
As mentioned above the Awards will honor services / companies / people based on future accomplishments. Who will be the new Steve Jobs? Which company can change the way we do business, will create the new standard, disrupt business sectors? What service or product will change the Web forever?
Why don’t you tell us! Suggest your favorite services and help them become invincible.
The word just got out…
Jason Calacanis is giving a keynote speech at The Next Web Conference! Jason is a successful Serial Internet Entrepreneur and an extraordinary human being. Read more about him at Wikipedia or in this Wired Article.
I’m always looking for some cool opportunities to show Fleck to an audience. I believe Startups face two major problems:
1. Get funding (at least in Europe you have to do a lot more than just snap your fingers)
2. Get published (create a hype)
So as of now I’ll start a series called: “Cool opportunities for startups”. If I see an opportunity I’ll share it here. This is the first one. And why not start with The Next Web Conference. This conference is attended by web influentials only, and a lot of cool stuff is happening out there for startups.
Startup Arena, Showcases on main stage and Speedpitching sessions. That sound s cool right? Check it out.
Andy Wood, just gave a glimps of what must be the future of digital movies.
It is really interesting to see how this works. They change human expressions into a mathematical equation and from there on they can put any actor / person into any avatar / person….
Hmmm this is hard to explain, the best thing to do is see for yourself!
